Beartown:

One of the most intriguing scenic areas in the
region is Beartown State Park, a natural area of
107 acres located on the eastern summit of Droop
Mountain.
The area was donated to the Nature Conservancy
by a private landowner; in 1970 The Department of  
Natural Resources acquired the property and a few
years thereafter designated it a state park.
Falls at Hills Creek:
Driving along scenic Route 39 west of Mill Point and
east of Richwood, there is a quiet area where three
ambunctious waterfalls flow – each more spectacular
than the other.

The Falls of Hills Creek is the glittering jewel in
the crown of the Monongahela National Forest.  The
114 acre area sits just south of Highway 39 – 5
miles west of the Cranberry Mountain Nature
Center -
and is marked with a Monongahela National Forest
Recreation sign.
Droop Mountain:

Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park is located in the
southern portion of Pocahontas County and is the site of
West Virginia's last significant Civil War

The Highland Scenic Highway, a National Forest
Scenic Byway, is the highest major roadway in West
Virginia and extends 43 miles from Richwood to U.S.
Route 219, seven miles north of Marlinton. The
Highway follows State Route 39/55 for 21 miles
from Richwood to the Cranberry Mountain Visitor
Center.  It then turns onto State Route 150 for the
22 mile Parkway section and rises from an elevation of
2,300 feet to over 4,500 feet.  The Parkway is not
maintained for winter travel, but the unplowed road offers
people on snowmobiles and cross country skis a special
ribbon of winter fun!   
Cass Scenic Railroad State Park:

Located in the charming, historic town of Cass, WV,
the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park transports
passengers back in time for an unforgettable
adventure.  Restored company buildings and the
Cass Country Store add to the charm and
atmosphere of this quaint old logging town.

Re-live an era when steam-driven locomotives were an
essential part of everyday life.  Today, train
passengers experience breathtaking trips through
mountain wilderness areas.

Cass Scenic Railroad offers three train ride
destinations: Whittaker Station, Bald Knob, or
Spruce.
Greenbrier River Trail:
This abandoned grade, converted to rail-trail
traversing 30 bridges and two tunnels, unveils some
of the region’s most invigorating scenery to the
users.  Adjacent to the trail for most of the 78 miles
is the legendary, peacefully flowing Greenbrier
River, known for its Small-mouth bass fishing as well
as its simple beauty.  The Greenbrier has its
source in the northern part of the county with
contributing seasonal runs and underground springs.

Cranberry Glades:
Cranberry Glades Botanical Area
The Cranberry Glades is the largest area of bogs, or
acidic wetlands, in West Virginia, a unique and exotic
ecosystem on 750 acres. This spectacular and
beautiful area was established by the United States
Forest Service in 1965, to protect and preserve over
60 unique plant species, many of them descended
from seeds that took root here over 10,000 years ago.

Silhouetted dramatically against a mountainous
backdrop in Green Bank, West Virginia is the Robert
C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT), the largest
fully steerable telescope on Earth.  The GBT – 485
feet tall and weighing 17 million pounds – is the largest
moving structure on land.  It features clear optics and a
computer controlled reflecting surface 2.3 acres in area!
Pearl S. Buck Birthplace:

Today, the birthplace of Pearl S. Buck in Hillsboro,
West Virginia stands in loving memory of the woman
who helped shape the 20th century through her writing,
her efforts, and her example.  Built in 1857, the house
serves as a museum with original family furniture and
other personal belongings.   Knowledgeable guides will
meet you and give you a thorough tour.
